{"id":5538,"date":"2019-07-12T14:00:10","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T12:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.women-in-exile.net\/?p=5538"},"modified":"2019-07-12T14:00:10","modified_gmt":"2019-07-12T12:00:10","slug":"bruecken-bauen-festival-ein-protestcamp-fuer-fluechtlingsfrauen-in-oranienplatz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.women-in-exile.net\/en\/pm\/bruecken-bauen-festival-ein-protestcamp-fuer-fluechtlingsfrauen-in-oranienplatz\/","title":{"rendered":"PM: \u201cBuilding bridges\u201d Festival: A protest camp for refugee women* in Oranienplatz"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Women\nin Exile and Friends<\/strong>, a refugee women*s\u2019 organization, want to\nhold a protest camp in a form of a <strong>festival <\/strong><strong>between 26<\/strong><sup><strong>th<\/strong><\/sup><strong>\n&#8211; 28<\/strong><sup><strong>th<\/strong><\/sup><strong> July,<\/strong> because we want to continue\nfighting against racism, sexism and discrimination in a joyful way.\nOur everyday life is full of pain and hard times, hence as a\npolitical strategy when we come together, we want to care about\nourselves. We are organizing it with our national wide networks and\nwith the support from local activist groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But\nthe protest camp \u201cBuilding Bridges Festival\u201d is encountering\nresistance amongst the authorities to allow it to happen in\nOranienplatz, a reference for the refugee movement. Oranienplatz is a\nsymbol of resistance against laws that violate basic human rights as\nthe freedom of movement, proper accommodation, right to education and\nwork. Asylum Law makes\nrefugees second class citizens and means double discrimination for\nrefugee women*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities\nwanted to deny us to be in a public space like Oranienplatz, because\nwe are not the victims that European societies expect us to be. We\nare not weak and helpless. We know why we are here. We understand\nthat we have rights and we will fight for them because we are strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calling\nour festival \u201cBuilding Bridges\u201d was intentionally because we are\naware of the existing gap between illegalized people, refugees and\ngerman citizens. A gap within the society that ends up creating again\nsaving hero*ines and fleeing victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\nappreciate the work of Carola Rackete and we are happy they have\nreleased her. We expect that many others will follow her steps. But\nwe wonder why mainstream solidarity campaigns are done for those who\nrescue. What is with the thousands, that were left dying in the sea\nand furthermore? Who cares for those who arrived and are struggling\ndaily with structural racism, discrimination and sexism of Fortress\nEurope?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who\ncares about Rita Awour Ojunge, who was found dead at the end on June\naround her lager in Hohenleipisch, and all those like her who have\nmet death as a result of the structural violence and racism of the\nlager system? Rita had been missing for 2 months before the police\nfound her. Did the police invest enough time and\nused the adequate means or is it that a non-white&#8217;s life or\nrefugee&#8217;s life is not a priority?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nThere is a need for building bridges in times of death and\ncriminalization, and we claim Oranienplatz as a public space for\neverybody, and expect the festival to be a moment to speak between us\nall, to bring awareness so that we don\u2019t reproduce colonialism,\npatriarchy and start a conversation on how to build an inclusive\nsociety for all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women in Exile &#038; Friends, eine Fl\u00fcchtlingsfrauen*organisation, will ein Protestcamp in Form eines Festivals von 26.7 &#8211; 28.7 Juli abhalten, denn wir wollen weiterhin mit Freude gegen Rassismus, Sexismus und Diskriminierung k\u00e4mpfen.
